Preparation

The purpose of GAMSAT is to assess your ability to understand and analyse written and graphically presented material. GAMSAT measures skills and knowledge acquired over a long period of time, as well as the ability to reason, make logical deductions and form judgments. For non-science graduates some specific preparation in the form of a course of reading on relevant basic sciences to first year university level is highly recommended. Some candidates may wish to enrol in a short science course to ensure adequate preparation.

Please note that neither the medical schools, UCAS, nor ACER recommend or endorse any particular texts or preparation courses, nor do they support any commercially available courses or have any association with such courses.

Further Preparation Advice:

GAMSAT Preparation Sect 1 & 2 - The best way to prepare for Sections 1 & 2 is to read widely, read periodicals, read novels, read pretty much whatever you can get your hands on. Think about, and understand what you are reading.  Look for the implied meaning in what you read.  Form opinions, and judgements that you can then apply into interesting pieces of writing for Sect 2.

GAMSAT Preparation Sect 3 - There are three sections to the test: Reasoning in Humanities & Social Sciences; Written Communication; and Reasoning in Biological & Physical Sciences. Most candidates are concerned with the third section because it assumes a certain level of knowledge (equivalent to first year university level chemistry and biology, and final secondary school level physics).

People prepare for Section 3 of GAMSAT in a number of different ways, for example:

  • working through the GAMSAT preparation material published by ACER  (all available from the UCAS shop):

                   Sample Questions (2nd ed. pub. 2001) @ £16.00

                   Practice Questions (pub. 1996) @ £16.00

                   Practice Test (pub. 1998) @ £26.00

The Sample Questions and Practice Questions are equivalent in volume to half an actual test, however they have the same type of questions you can expect in GAMSAT. The Practice Test is equivalent to a full test.  No questions are repeated accross booklets.

  • obtaining copies of first year chemistry and biology texts and A-Level school physics texts - I'm afraid that we do not have a suggested reading list;
  • others engage tutors to assist with their revision;
  • others enrol in short courses or uni subjects;
