Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB; 4-year Graduate Entry Programme)

The 4-year graduate entry Medicine programme is open to graduates in any discipline.

Course outline

The MBChB programme at Keele is an integrated, hybrid course combining problem-based learning in the early years with lectures and laboratory, dissecting room and experiential learning activities. In the later years, the emphasis shifts onto workplace-based learning. There is no distinct separation into pre-clinical and clinical studies: students engage with learning in clinical settings from the beginning of the course and continue their learning of basic biological and social sciences throughout the programme.

Learning throughout the programme is arranged under five themes:

1. Scientific Basis of Medicine

2. Clinical, Communication and Information Management Skills

3. Individual, Community & Population Health

4. Quality & Efficiency in Healthcare

5. Ethics and Personal & Professional Development

Assessment is based on these themes.  Assessments take place regularly throughout the course.

The five-year medical programme is divided into five year-long modules in four phases:

Phase I: Module 1 (year 1) – Challenges to Health

Phase II: Module 2 (year 2) – Integrated Clinical Pathology I

Module 3 (year 3) – Integrated Clinical Pathology II

Phase III: Module 4 (year 4) – Integrated Clinical Practice

Phase IV: Module 5 (year 5) – Preparation for Professional Practice

Phase I provides a general introduction to the basic and clinical science of medicine, introducing areas of study which are revisited in greater detail in subsequent phases. Graduates with appropriate broad academic ability – demonstrated by degree class and GAMSAT score – may apply to enter directly into phase II, beginning in module 2. Students entering by this route are required to attend a two-week induction course to orient them to our styles of learning and teaching and to introduce essential concepts in professionalism, ethics and communication. Graduate entrants to phase II undertake a learning needs analysis at the beginning of the induction course and meet regularly with tutors through their first year to ensure that any supplementary work required to fill in details learned by other students in phase I is identified and completed satisfactorily.

Entry requirements

The Graduate Entry Programme is open to UK graduates in any discipline who have obtained – or are predicted to obtain – a minimum of upper second-class honours (2i) and who have obtained a satisfactory score in GAMSAT.

In 2011 students must offer an overall weighted score of >58 with a section III score of >55 supported by a score of 50 or more in all other sections. Alternatively, an overall weighted score of >55, with a section III score of >58 and 50 or more in all other sections is acceptable.

UCAS forms are assessed and candidates achieving a threshold score are invited for interview. Applicants should provide evidence of:

• Understanding of the role of a doctor and commitment to medicine

• Appropriate work experience in caring roles and medical settings

• A range of independently pursued extracurricular activities

• Ability to work successfully in teams and to communicate both with peers and with other groups

Applicants who have not already completed their degree courses will only be made offers conditional upon achieving a minimum of a 2i degree. Interviews will take place in February/March.

Structured 20-minute interviews are conducted by a three-person panel consisting of an academic, a clinician and a lay member. Offers will be made in March.
